Genes and stem cells: predestination and rebirth?

by Dr. Fred Maxfield
Weill Cornell Medical College

with a lunch reception

This talk will cover two topics briefly. Aside from the technological issues, which are advancing rapidly, these topics raise significant questions for individuals and for society.

< It now costs about $1,000 to decipher the entire genome DNA sequence for a person. What does that mean?
< How could it help or harm you?
< Would you want to know your DNA sequence?
< What could they do with the information?
< What is a stem cell?
< Where do they come from?
< Is this somehow related to cloning?

Fred Maxfield is the Vladimir and Wanda Toscanini Horowitz Professor and Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry at Weill Cornell Medical College. He received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Cornell University and did post-doctoral research at the National Cancer Institute. He was a faculty member at NYU Medical College and Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons before moving to Cornell in 1995. His research laboratory uses powerful microscopes to study how cells carry out basic functions such as moving and eating. This research leads to understanding of how these processes go wrong in conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, heart disease and some inherited neurological diseases. At SMTV, Fred has been on the vestry and served as warden. He has also played on the Without a Prayer softball team since its founding.

SMTV's Adult Education - Spiritual Development Forum is intended to stimulate dialogue with leading thinkers and within our community. These talks aim to deepen our understanding of our own faith tradition, other religious traditions, and examine critical moral and social dilemmas based on insights from science, history, theology and the arts.

Please contact Michael Fenlon of the Vestry at fenlonwu@juno.com with your suggestions, or if you would like to participate in organizing a program. Previous programs examined the Islamic faith, and more recently a forum on the history and future of New York by Columbia University Professor Ken Jackson.
